What cropping does — and does not — do

A crop selects a rectangle of source pixels and copies them unchanged into a new, smaller image. The kept pixels are bit-identical to the original, which means cropping is lossless with respect to quality. What it does reduce is pixel count: a 6000×4000 photo cropped to its center third might be 2000×1300, and enlarging that crop later will show interpolation softness.

Exact-pixel cropping for forms and documents

Passport and visa applications specify pixel dimensions precisely (600×600 for the US, 35×45 mm at defined DPI elsewhere). This is where 'crop to ratio' is not enough: you need the box to output exactly N×M pixels. Type the dimensions, position the frame over the subject, and check head-size requirements separately — most rejections come from composition rules (head height, background), not the pixel dimensions themselves.

Crop-then-resize versus resize-then-crop

Order matters for quality. If you need a 1080×1080 square from a 4000×3000 photo, crop the square region first at full resolution, then resize the crop to 1080×1080. The useful mental model: megapixels halve every time you crop to half the area, and every destination has a floor. Social feeds tolerate 1080 pixels on the long edge; print wants roughly 240–300 pixels per inch of physical size. Crop with the destination's floor in mind before you frame.

Aspect ratio is the second decision and the one that causes rework. Cropping free-form and discovering later that the destination demands 16:9 or 1:1 means cropping again, tighter, from a composition you already approved.
