Composition, aspect ratio, and destination fit

Crop for the final frame without cutting away the information viewers need

Cropping changes composition and aspect ratio by permanently excluding pixels from the exported copy. Choose a social, print, device, product, or cinema preset only when it matches the destination, position the crop around the real subject, and preview decorative overlays separately from the rectangular source boundary.

Ratio

Aspect ratio describes shape, while pixels describe resolution

A 1:1 square can be 300 by 300 pixels or 2000 by 2000 pixels. Pick the ratio to match the frame, then confirm whether the output has enough pixels for its display or print use. A ratio preset does not guarantee compliance with a platform's file-size, minimum-resolution, or safe-area requirements.

Composition

Protect faces, text, products, and visual breathing room

Move the crop so the focal subject remains clear and important edges do not feel accidental. Check logos, captions, horizons, hands, and product boundaries. For responsive website images, leave room around the subject because another layout may apply additional cropping. Use Original when the whole composition must remain visible.

Output shape

Circle, heart, and other overlays still need a compatible file format

A decorative overlay can mask corners in the output preview. When those corners must remain transparent, choose a format that supports transparency, such as PNG or WebP. JPEG fills transparent regions with a solid background. Inspect the downloaded file in the destination instead of relying only on the on-page mask.

Practical review

Crop boundary review

Scan every edge of the selected frame before exporting; important losses usually happen at the boundary.

  • Confirm the preset ratio matches the current destination requirement.
  • Check faces, text, logos, hands, products, and horizon lines near every edge.
  • Verify output pixels are sufficient for the intended display or print size.
  • Choose a transparency-capable format for non-rectangular masks when needed.
  • Keep the uncropped original for future ratios and responsive layouts.
Cropping questions

Aspect ratios, exact pixels, social presets, masks, and quality

What is the difference between cropping and resizing an image?

Cropping removes pixels outside a selected frame and can change composition or aspect ratio. Resizing keeps the full frame but changes its pixel dimensions. Use crop to reframe; use resize to make the complete image larger or smaller.

How do I crop an image to a perfect square?

Choose the 1:1 preset, move and scale the crop around the subject, then check all four edges. Export at enough pixels for the destination, because the square ratio alone does not determine resolution.

Which aspect ratio should I use for Instagram or other social media?

Use the preset that matches the specific placement you are preparing, such as square, portrait, landscape, or vertical video. Platform requirements can change, so verify the current publishing screen before processing a large batch.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

Cropping does not blur the pixels that remain, but it reduces the total pixel dimensions available. If a very small crop is later enlarged, it can look soft or pixelated. Check the output width and height before export.

Can I crop to exact pixel dimensions?

The tool provides ratio and output controls that help define the frame. Confirm the final displayed dimensions before download; use the resize tool afterward if the crop has the right composition but needs an exact pixel size.

How do I make a circular image with transparent corners?

Choose the circle overlay and export to PNG or another transparency-capable format. JPEG cannot preserve transparent corners and will flatten them against a background color.

Why did important content disappear after using an aspect-ratio preset?

A new ratio must exclude part of the original frame unless the shapes already match. Reposition the crop around the subject, choose a less restrictive ratio, or add padding with a border/canvas tool instead of removing pixels.

Can I restore the pixels outside a downloaded crop?

No. The export contains only the selected region. Return to the original source to make another crop, which is why the original should remain untouched.
