Code 128, EAN, UPC, Code 39, ITF-14, MSI, and Pharmacode follow different data and length rules. Select the symbology, value, labels, dimensions, margin, colors, text, scale, and export format, then scan the printed or displayed result with the devices and packaging conditions that will actually use it.

Choose the code family required by the receiving system

Code 128 supports broad alphanumeric data, while EAN and UPC identify retail items under GS1 rules and require fixed numeric structures. ITF-14 is used for certain trade-item packaging. A technically scannable image does not assign a legitimate product identifier; obtain GS1 keys and follow industry rules where required.

Print quality

Quiet zones, contrast, dimensions, and placement determine whether scanners can read the symbol

Keep dark bars on a light background with clear margins on both sides. Reducing bar height, distorting width, placing the code over patterns, or wrapping it around a tight curve can reduce reliability. SVG preserves vector edges; PNG scale should match final pixel and print needs.

Verification

A valid check digit and a visual preview are not the same as barcode verification

Check-digit algorithms catch certain data-entry errors, while formal verification measures print contrast, modulation, defects, quiet zones, and dimensional compliance. Scan bulk outputs, confirm human-readable values and filenames, and use a verifier for retail, logistics, healthcare, or regulated production.

Which barcode type should I choose?

Use the symbology required by the scanner, marketplace, retailer, carrier, or internal system. Code 128 is flexible; EAN and UPC have strict retail identification rules.

Does generating an EAN or UPC barcode create a registered product number?

No. The image encodes the entered digits. Legitimate retail identifiers normally come from GS1 or an authorized allocation process.

What is a barcode check digit?

It is a digit calculated from the other digits to catch some entry or scanning errors. It does not prove ownership, authenticity, or print quality.

Why does a barcode need a quiet zone?

Scanners need clear space around the symbol to distinguish its boundaries. Text, borders, artwork, and packaging seams should not enter that margin.

Can I use colored barcode bars?

Use strong contrast with dark bars on a light, nonreflective background. Some color combinations scan poorly under red illumination, so test the actual printer and scanner.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

SVG is useful for scalable print and layout work. PNG is convenient for fixed-size digital use when exported at enough pixels. Test the final rendered size either way.
