iPhone photo compatibility workflow

Convert HEIC photos to JPG, PNG, or WebP for the app that needs them

HEIC is efficient for modern photo libraries, but some forms, editors, websites, and Windows workflows still expect JPG or PNG. Choose the destination format first, then verify orientation, dimensions, color, file size, and any metadata you need before archiving or sharing the converted copy.

Format choice

Use JPG for broad photo compatibility, PNG for lossless-style output, and WebP for modern web delivery

JPG is usually the practical choice for email, forms, document software, and services that reject HEIC. PNG can be much larger for a camera photo and does not restore source information, but it avoids another JPEG-style save when a PNG-only workflow requires it. WebP suits supported websites and apps when smaller modern delivery matters.

Orientation and color

A successful decode still needs a visual comparison

HEIC files can rely on orientation and color information that different decoders interpret differently. Open the converted image and check whether portrait photos are upright, skin tones and saturated colors remain plausible, and highlights have not shifted. Browser support can vary, so a file that fails to decode may need export through Apple Photos or another HEIC-aware application.

Size and records

Resize delivery copies, but preserve a master when dates or camera data matter

Maximum width and height can prepare a lighter attachment or upload without changing aspect ratio. Avoid upscaling unless a destination strictly requires larger dimensions because it cannot create new camera detail. Conversion may omit capture dates, GPS, device data, or other metadata; keep the HEIC original or verify metadata separately when those records are important.

Practical review

HEIC conversion review

Check the exported file in the software that originally rejected the HEIC rather than treating download as the final test.

  • Confirm JPG, PNG, or WebP is accepted by the destination.
  • Open portrait and landscape results to verify orientation.
  • Compare color, highlights, and fine detail with the HEIC source.
  • Check pixel dimensions and avoid unintended upscaling.
  • Preserve the original when metadata, Live Photo components, depth data, or archival quality matters.
HEIC compatibility questions

JPG versus PNG, iPhone photos, metadata, batches, and browser support

Why are iPhone photos saved as HEIC instead of JPG?

HEIC is a container based on the High Efficiency Image File Format and can store high-quality photos efficiently. Compatibility is the usual reason to create a JPG, PNG, or WebP copy; the HEIC original can remain useful in the Apple photo library.

Should I convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for ordinary photos and broad compatibility. Choose PNG when a workflow explicitly requires PNG or you want a lossless-style raster output and accept a larger file. PNG does not restore detail already encoded in the HEIC.

Will converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so the quality setting affects detail and file size. Start high enough to protect faces, text, and texture, compare with the HEIC, and avoid repeatedly converting the JPG again.

Can I batch convert several HEIC photos?

Yes. Select multiple HEIC or HEIF files, apply one output format, quality, and optional size limit, then convert all and download a ZIP. Review mixed lighting and orientations before deleting or moving originals.

Why will my HEIC file not open in the browser converter?

HEIC decoding support and file variants differ. A file may contain an unsupported codec, multi-image structure, depth information, or corruption. Export it from Apple Photos or use a dedicated HEIC application when browser decoding fails.

Does HEIC conversion preserve the photo date and GPS metadata?

Do not assume it does. Browser conversion commonly creates a new image and may omit EXIF, GPS, or capture-time fields. Check the downloaded file with the metadata viewer and retain the original for authoritative photo records.

Why is the converted PNG much larger than the HEIC?

PNG is inefficient for many photographic scenes compared with HEIC. It stores the decoded pixels using a different compression approach, so a larger result is expected. Use JPG or WebP when compatibility and smaller delivery matter more than PNG output.

Can changing the extension from .heic to .jpg convert the photo?

No. Renaming changes only the filename; it does not decode and re-encode the image data. Software that cannot read HEIC will still fail because the bytes remain HEIC.
