Removing color changes how neighboring subjects separate: a red object and a green background can become nearly the same gray. Use grayscale strength, brightness, contrast, and the monochrome presets to preserve readable shapes and texture, then choose an output format that suits the next step.
Colors with different hues can carry similar brightness, so they may merge after conversion. Compare faces, clothing, charts, logos, and objects that were separated mainly by color. Increase contrast only enough to restore shape, and use brightness to place the overall tone without clipping pale or dark detail.
Classic grayscale is a neutral baseline. Soft mono lowers the visual edge for portraits or document backgrounds, while high-contrast noir deliberately sacrifices subtle tones for drama. Film-style treatment can change the perceived balance further. Start neutral, then choose a preset because it helps the subject rather than because the label sounds appealing.
PNG is useful for crisp line art, text, and transparency; JPEG or WebP can be smaller for photographs but introduce lossy artifacts according to quality. Grayscale appearance does not automatically make every export small. Compare dimensions and byte size, and keep a color master because discarded color cannot be recovered from the downloaded monochrome copy.

In everyday use the terms overlap, but grayscale contains many shades between black and white. A strict two-tone or threshold image contains only black and white pixels and produces a very different result.
Hue and brightness are separate properties. Two colors can be visually distinct in color but have similar luminance, so a straightforward grayscale conversion maps them to similar tones. Contrast adjustments can help, but advanced channel mixing offers more control.

The downloaded result does not contain the original visible color information. Keep the color source because changing saturation later cannot reconstruct the original hues from a grayscale export.

Use moderate contrast and adjust brightness while watching highlights and shadows. Strong contrast is not always the answer; preserving midtone separation in faces, fabric, clouds, and architecture often creates more depth.
