Recompress WebP images for the page they will actually serve

WebP can already be compact, so recompression should begin with a clear destination: a card, article image, product gallery, or full-screen asset. Reduce dimensions when the layout needs fewer pixels, then tune quality while inspecting transparency, gradients, texture, and any text baked into the image.

If a WebP came from an optimized website or image pipeline, re-encoding at the same or higher quality can save little or even create a larger file. Compare bytes before and after. Pixel dimensions often matter more than another aggressive quality step

A WebP displayed at 800 pixels wide does not need a 3000-pixel source unless responsive or zoom behavior uses it. Set maximum dimensions that match the largest real slot, preserve aspect ratio, and avoid upscaling. Then choose quality based on the resized preview rather than the oversized original.

WebP can carry alpha transparency and animation, but a simple canvas recompression workflow may not preserve every source feature or frame. Inspect transparent boundaries carefully and treat animated files as unsupported unless the interface explicitly previews and exports the animation. Why did compressing a WebP save very little space?

The source may already be efficiently encoded. Recompression cannot remove the same information twice without eventually lowering quality, and a new encoder setting can sometimes create a similar or larger file.

Can a compressed WebP keep transparency?

WebP supports alpha transparency, and the tool exports WebP. Inspect soft shadows and antialiased transparent edges after download because re-rendering can affect how those boundaries look.

Does this compressor preserve animated WebP files?

Do not assume it does. The browser canvas workflow is designed around still-image output and may export only a rendered frame. Keep the original and use an animation-aware encoder when motion must remain intact.

What WebP quality should I use for a website?

Choose by visual review and destination rather than a fixed number. Start near the default, reduce gradually, and inspect the hardest regions. Stop before texture, text, faces, or gradients become visibly damaged.
