Raise brightness cautiously when the entire frame is too dark. If faces or foreground details are hidden but the sky is already bright, lifting shadows is usually safer than pushing every pixel upward. Lower highlights when pale areas lose texture. Watch white clothing, clouds, screens, and reflective surfaces because clipped highlights become flat patches that another slider cannot reconstruct.

Contrast should reveal shape, not erase information

Increasing contrast expands the difference between light and dark areas, which can add depth to a flat photo. Too much contrast crushes shadow detail and clips highlights. Decreasing it can help a harsh scan or midday photo, but an excessive reduction produces gray, weak tones. Compare the preview at normal size and zoom into hair, dark fabric, clouds, and text before deciding.
